On January 31, 2020, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar declared a nationwide public health emergency (PHE) for COVID-19 retroactive January 27, 2020. Since then, the PHE has been extended several times.  Although it may extend through 2021, states should begin planning for the eventual expiration of the temporary authorities afforded during the pandemic.
