According to the 2021 KPMG Thriving in an AI World report, 31% of life sciences executives say their company has accelerated the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) as a result of COVID-19, and 81% say they want their company to be even more aggressive in adopting it.

The COVID-19 pandemic was eye-opening for the life sciences industry. Confronted with a global health threat, the industry rallied resources and capabilities to deliver highly effective COVID-19 vaccines in less than 12 months—an endeavor that, in the past, would have taken years. This astonishing achievement would not have been possible without the application of AI techniques developed over the past decade.

This report uncovers important changes sweeping across the life sciences industry that can impact AI adoption; potential challenges; and exciting opportunities.

AI is a key reason we had five viable vaccine candidates so quickly. It’s also a key reason the industry will never go back to operating as it did prior to COVID-19. Now that we’ve proven what’s possible, we’ve raised the bar on what the industry and the public will expect.
